Intuitive Divination Tools: Pendulum

How They Work

Pendulums have been used for many centuries for seeking out divine answers and wisdom. This method of seeking is also known as dowsing and relies on the movement and motion of the pointner. Pendulums will change direction to answer out questions and provide us with guidance.

Pendulums tap into your own intuition and vibration and cut through the blocks that are hindering the way.

How to Select One

Pendulums can be made of various materials, but it consists of a chain and weighted object such as wood, metal, glass, or crystal. I prefer a crystal pendulum.  They are pointed or triangle shaped to direct energy towards the earth’s core so that we can find grounding as we tap into this divination tool. You should cleanse it prior to using (see How to Cleanse below). The more you work with it the more connected it becomes and the easier it is to tap into.

When choosing a pendulum, I prefer to do so in person so that I can pick up on its unique vibration and intuitively choose one. If it resonates with you, that is the one. Some of the best pendulums are quartz varieties, especially clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, and sodalite.

How to Cleanse It

You should always cleanse your pendulum once you bring it home before using it. There are a few different ways you can do this.

  • Smudge it

  • Run it under some moon water

  • Place it out under a full moon

  • Place it in a stream of sunlight for a short time

  • Bury it in soil overnight

  • Put it near other cleansing crystals.

How to Use Your Pendulum

  1. Center and Ground Yourself-if you can quiet your mind and ground yourself it will be easier for you to connect to your higher self.

  2. Connect to the Pendulum-Sit with your pendulum and hold it in. your fist by your heart for a few breathes. I also thank it for it’s guidance and direction that is only for my highest good.

  3. Establish a Connection-Hold your pendulum 6-8 inches above your board or the surface you are using. Begin by asking a simple yes/no question that you know the answer to be aware of the movement. This allows you to see your pendulum’s response and know how it will answer yes and no questions. (I like to ask these yes/no clarifying questions once a month to see if there is any change in how it is working. For me it has always stayed the same.)

  4. Ask your Questions-Simple yes/no questions are best. You can use my free printable pendulum charts to help you get started.

  5. Thank your pendulum for it’s answers when you are finished. Keep it in a safe place and take good care of it. I like to keep mine on my alter by my quartz and amethyst crystals.
